In the Lllewellyn Deck version of The Nine of Swords, a woman sits up in bed, like being stirred awake in the middle of night, perhaps by a nightmare. She holds her face in her hands, while nine swords hover over her, on the rear wall, nearly like the the Sword of Damocles.
Swords are Thoughts and Ideas in Tarot. Here, there is too much Thinking! A lack of Focus is indicated. In Numerology, "9" is the End of a Cycle. It's a time to clear out the closets, and let go of what is no longer serving you.
Traditionally, this is a Card of ...Worry and anxiety, unable to sleep at night, overwhelmed by guilt and regrets, being consumed by negativity, feeling unworthy, being overly fearful, worrying about the future, living in your head, being overly sensitive to other people’s opinions...
It is often thought of as one of the worst Cards in the Tarot deck, but in reality, all adversity is merely an Opportunity in disguise!
